Tom Harkin is Iowa’s champion for affordable, accessible health care, for lifesaving health research, and for protecting Iowans’ health privacy.
Working with Republicans and Democrats alike, Tom Harkin has helped to double America’s investment in health research that is leading to breakthrough treatments for breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other deadly diseases.
Tom Harkin is also focused on increasing health care access for rural Iowans. Last year, President Bush signed Harkin’s Rural Health Initiative, which will attract health care providers to small towns and communities and support our rural hospitals. He is also working to pass legislation that would increase Medicare payments to Iowa by $1 billion.
Tom Harkin believes Iowans deserve a real Patients’ Bill of Rights that puts medical decision back in the hands of Iowa families and doctors. He also supports strong patient privacy protections that require written consent before patients’ medical records are disclosed to other medical facilities, pharmacies or insurance companies.
Tom Harkin believes that a stronger, brighter future for Iowa means affordable, accessible, and quality health care and health privacy protections. That’s why Tom Harkin works so hard for better health care for every Iowan.
