STATEMENT OF SENATOR TOM HARKIN REGARDING HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF
9/1/2005
My heart and prayers go out to the families and communities
along the Gulf coast that have been devastated by Hurricane
Katrina.
Below, you will find a list of websites and
phone numbers where you can get more information on ways to help. Our
prayers are important. But, as President Kennedy said, “God’s
work on earth must truly be our own.” It is clear that this
disaster will require an unprecedented response from the federal
government. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee,
I will be working closely with Senators and officials from the affected
states to respond to their needs.
Let me emphasize
that each and every one of us can make a difference. At times like
this, we are reminded that we truly are one American family. And
families look out for one another. I have no doubt that Iowans will
open up their hearts and be as generous as possible in the days, weeks,
and months ahead.
