HARKIN ANNOUNCES RURAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDING FOR IOWA
4/11/2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As part of his continuing support for rural Iowa,
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced today that three communities will
receive over $570,000 in grants and over $3.2 million in loans for
rural development projects from the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA). Harkin is the ranking Democratic on the Senate
Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee.
“Supporting community projects is essential for economic growth in
rural Iowa,” said Harkin. “These funds will help make necessary
upgrades for Iowa’s rural infrastructure.”
Details of the grants and loans are as follows:
Adair County — $500,000 grant to the Southern Iowa Rural Water
Association to install new water distribution lines northwest of Adair
that will serve approximately 300 rural users. The project
includes construction of an elevated water storage facility, booster
station and additional supply wells.
City of Hartley — $21,150 grant to assist in financing purchase of a new ambulance.
Jefferson County — $3,000,000 loan to the Jefferson County Civic Center to construct a Civic Center for the community.
City of Lenox — $1,100 grant for upgrades of their police
vehicles. Specifically, the funds will be used to purchase and
install radio repeaters for the vehicles.
City of Monona — $50,000 grant and $243,000 loan to construct a child
care center near the MFL MAR-MAC Elementary School. The Child
Care facility will have space for 74 children and will likely partner
with Headstart and Early Headstart.
Storm Lake — $1,500 grant to the Gingerbread House Child Development
Center to purchase toddler playground equipment and
surfacing.
