HARKIN ANNOUNCES BOOST FOR UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
4/7/2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the
University of Iowa received $835,446 to support a cardiovascular
interdisciplinary research fellowship from the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services (HHS). Harkin is the ranking Democrat on the
Senate panel that funds health and education initiatives.
“Funding medical research is the first step towards the technological
and scientific breakthroughs that provide hope for many Americans,”
Harkin said. “This research will better our scientific
understanding and improve the quality of life for Iowans and others
across the country.”
Harkin has been a long-time supporter of medical research. In 2003,
Harkin achieved an historic five-year doubling of the National
Institutes of Health, the federal agency responsible for medical
research.
